Operations Deep Freeze Cruise Books 1969-70 Operation Deep Freeze
The USS Edisto AG89/AGB2 made several cruises north to Thule Greenland and the Arctic waters and records indicate that she made 6 cruises south to the Antarctic. The first was an Arctic cruise in 1947 followed by the first southern cruise to the Antarctica. The next documented southern cruise, Operation Deep Freeze One, was in 1955-56, where she joined two other icebreakers and three cargo ships in Task Force 43, an expedition led by Rear Admiral George J. Dufek. She sailed south again in 1958-59 and every other year thereafter for a total of six (6) southern cruises of which five (5) were recorded in a cruise book.
Unfortunately, cruise books were not made for the shorter northern cruises but in 1965 the Edisto had just returned from the Antarctic when she was dispatched north to rescue the Arctic Research Laboratory ice Station II (ARLIS II). This rescue effort was documented by a Boston television station, WHDH-TV Seven and in the 64/65 cruise book which contained both the northern and southern cruises.
The cruise books are in portable document format (pdf). If you don't have Acrobat Reader installed, you may get the FREE Reader by downloading it here: http://get.adobe.com/reader/
The Association owes a deep gratitude to the shipmates who loaned their cruise books to be copied so they could be shared with all the USS Edisto crew members and families. These files and photos are what make up memories for many of us and are history to others. We owe as special thanks to the following:
